WoW how interesting and this 40 mile (+17K to +21K AEG) one way trek reads like something right up your alley too.. how
I bet you're already familiar with the south TH start area in the Saline Valley and with all your previous CA exploring, probably familiar with a lot more of this covered Inyo Mountains area ending at its north end in the Owens Valley at the interesting Reward Mine area.

After reading the historical part of this 40 mile "Lonesome Miner Trail", I wasn't expecting them to detail the trail navigation in a narrative like they did in this BLM link. With enough time, good prep, a few knowledgeable contacts, their recommended 7.5 topos, and HAZ TrailDEX-Route Manager to refine your route, you could disappear for quite a scenic adventure reliving old CA mining history from 1860-1930..how

The Inyo Mountains are an interesting range. Very much in the rain shadow of the Sierra they present a stark contrast to them and look like a true desert range with little vegetation or water. I question if there is any after the snow melts, or how well springs flow. Two weeks ago, when I was on Whitney they looked dry below 10,000', but that was the western side. However, the western side is likely the "wet" side of the range. One thing is for sure, while doing this, you'll have a great view of one of, if not thee, most spectacular ranges of mountains on the continent, or at the very least the 48 contiguous. That 60 mile escarpment from Olancha to Bishop is really impressive. I'm not assuming you have never seen it, but I remember my first time, and it was an incredible mass of rock to behold.

I am jealous - this sounds like a very adventurous "hike."
Perhaps I need to quit my job while my body can still take this kind of abuse???

That is a good description of many of our desert mountain ranges.

sign me up Letty. id like to do it in 2 days. ok, 3 days. but that's my final offer.

The funny thing is upon more research I have been on one end of this trail in Hunter canyon, didn't know it at the time, just followed this pretty good trail for a while. I've found a few more online resources and Michel Dicgonnet (sp?) has a segment or two of this trail written up in one of his books. I need to get in a lot better shape, too much flat lander hiking.
Will be going to Death Valley next week, but don't have this area on the radar for this trip.
