Parker Creek Sunday June 26

Assuming to fire issues develop there in the meantime. Going back for unfinished business from my aborted attempt in January when we got thwarted by the iced over snow. I'm interested in doing the lasso loop track that Jim Lyding posted for this area last year, 13 miles RT.

Great, I have been wanting to check out this area for a future backpacking trip.

yeah, I might as well just commit... I know I'm gonna go.

@The Stillernator
you might link the event to Aztec Peak as well... it might get some more interest.

@Tough_Boots
I've been meaning to link the other hikes, but I needed to go thru the mapping and see what applies. Aztec Peak and Abbey's way, right? anything else for the lasso loop hike?

I don't think so. Is that a road that finishes the lasso or an actual trail?

@Tough_Boots
I'm almost certain there is one section of a forest road that finishes the lasso loop.

You will walk on forest roads if you follow my GPS route above. After taking Trail #160 from the TH on Hwy 288 you get to the Carr TH on Forest Road 487. You head left on 487 to the Peterson TH where the Abbey's Way Trail starts and takes you to the top of Aztec Peak. The only other way down from Aztec Peak besides Abbey's Way is FR 487. The route I took was down 487 about 1/2 mile to its junction with FR 487A which goes to Murphy Ranch. I went right to keep on 487, and the dirt road took me back to the Carr TH after passing the Moody TH.

Bruce's route: http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=9088 that he did with Liz, JohnLP, Teva Joe, and Tim #2 is about 5 miles longer.

I would be more concerned by the extra 3,000ft rather than the added 5 miles. :o

Jim's route looks like a nice one. Too bad I'll be at work. :(

I don't remember it being very tough at all. I just wasn't excited about all the extra road walking on Jim's track.... plus we got to peek down in the canyons around Devils Chasm :y:

Checking the track again, it's actually almost all downhill on the track we took. I think the overall "Additional" elevation on my track was due to some pretty bad GPS "Drift" on the beginning of the track.

No way Bruce's route was 3,000' more elevation gain. I could make a comment about operator error, but I'll refrain for now. This hike isn't too tough, but it is if you have people over the night before and drink heavily while watching our beloved Suns get bounced from the playoffs by the hated Lakers.
Parker Creek to Aztec Peak should be on the short list for Arizona hikers. Just don't leave your backpack unattended when Red's dog is on the prowl. It was such a shame that the pooch defiled johnlp's pack while Tim #2 and Joe just watched and laughed.

That's why when we were there last week, we made sure sure to place our packs where Roper couldn't get to them. Didn't matter though, as he was too lazy to go down off the tower looking for trouble! :sl:

whoa let's back the train up...
A) the pack was yellow to begin with, we really didn't know what was going on
B) we didn't know it was John's pack
C) is anyone buying A or B?

I shrunk down Bruce's track a little and re-sync'd it. It's at about 4,500 which is at least closer to Nick's track http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=10606 which is about 5,000. It doesn't look too bad especially with the last miles being downhill. Though changing a 13 mile hike to an 18 mile hike might not be preferable to some, I'm down for either though not hiking on road would be preferable in my opinion. This is Chris' hike and changing the route is only an option if he makes it one. I just wanna get up to Aztec Peak again! :D

I was under the impression that it's not much road hiking. I don't mind a little bit. I did an 18 mile hike in the Pinals with Jim 2 years ago that involved some road hiking. It's already a long drive out and back and I'd to be home before my kids are in bed.

My route definitely has more road on it than Bruce's.

Dogs whizzing on packs and questionable elevation readings sounds like a party to me. I am in.
