GPS for auto

Anyone have a recommendation/warning about a GPS for a new car? I just got a new ride, and I didn't shell out for an in-dash GPS. I could use my Windows phone, but its GPS interface sucks.

We got a Garmin a couple of years back as a gift - I don't remember the model, but they all seem to work the same. Now we both have smart phones which use GPS, and we hardly ever use the big unit. Now we kinda need a map upgrade and it's going to cost us $60 - for the same maps we get free on our phones. Seems like it's something that's kinda going the way of the dodo.
That said, it is nice that you don't have to worry about a phone call coming in just as you're trying to find your Freeway exit...

We use a Garmin Nuvi - Relatively inexpensive and has all the bells and whistles we need.

I don't have any good recommendations, but I've been experimenting recently with smart phone (Google on Droid X) vs. my trail GPS (Garmin GPSMap 60 CSx). The spoken directions and voice recognition on the smart phone are really nice, but I find the Garmin beats it hands down in regards to quality of routing and in accuracy of where the destination really is. Google seems many times more likely to be badly wrong. The Garmin also seems a more precise, which makes big difference on tangles of multi-lane roads with lots of turns.

A couple of years ago I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 225W and have been very satisfied with it's overall performance and ease of use. This device has a feature where it can warn you of heavy traffic ahead. It does this by a built-in radio receiver tuned to traffic conditions (accidents, road work, etc)
The only drawback to this, and other GPS devices, is that over time as new roads are added and you must purchase the one-time updates or purchase "lifetime updates". I still think this should be a free service provided by the manufacturer to registered owners
