From Tyler Williams Canyoneering AZ book: Take Woody Mtn Rd #231 south from Route 66 (west of Flagstaff) for 20.2 miles. Go Right on #231A and using roads #231A and #538B proceed 3.2 miles to Road #538. Head Left (south) on #538 and follow it to its end in 5.2 miles at the trailhead for Secret Mountain and Loy Canyon.
I've driven most of this route, #231 and #538 are good roads (at least they were as of last Fall), although I haven't driven the last few miles all the way out to this particular trailhead. You can also check out the descriptions to Winter Cabin and Taylor Cabin in the same area. Good luck!

FR538 gets a little bad after you pass Turkey Butte, I'd recommend high clearance but you might make it in a sedan with a bit more clearance (aka something other than a prius) without scraping. (Note: I didn't go all the way to the TH, my turnoff was 2 miles before the secret mountain TH)

Glad I asked. There are some discrepancies between Maps and MyTopos. MyTopos is more accurate to your directions except 538D is where 538B likely should be. I'll also compare it to the Coconino Forest Map, though me thinks this one should wait till me gets ma Jeep. Thanks Toddak and Nonot.

I have always hiked in from FR 152 - there are little to no vehicle clearance issues using that T/H. (Plus it adds some 'meat' to the hike).

152 gets you to the Secret Canyon TH. I think he wants to just do Secret Mountain?

How about:
89a to 525 (Red Canyon Road)
525 to 795 (Lincoln Canyon Road)
795 to the Loy Canyon TH
It's a beautiful 5 mile hike to the Secret Mountain TH,
and at least an hour less driving time that the route through Flagstaff.
Passenger cars can make it.

I am going to have to try Loy Canyon and Secret Canyon, perhaps more towards end of summer early autumn. Maybe try to catch the waterfall in action in the Secret Canyon. Thanks folks, Bill T.
