Useful Source for Water Info

I got this from another list that I subscribe to (BackpackGearTest on yahoogroups). It show realtime streamflow data from various sites around the US:

http://water.usgs.gov

This could be really useful for planning hikes. For example, spring break starts for me one week from today and I am planning a 6 day loop in the Mazatzals. The website shows that some streams near where I'm hiking are all very low. The Verde River is in the 10 percentile, and both Wet Bottom Creek and the East Verde River are extremely low-at new record lows according to the website. So I'll be starting out with a large water load.

Just thought this might be useful.

Three cheers for the USGS! The USDA NRCS also maintains useful data on the net. You can check historical and daily readings from various SNOTEL's around the state or nation. Here's the Arizona access link:

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/water/snow/sntlwyaz.html

Use the drop down menu to pick a site. SNOTEL's range from White Horse Lake by Bill Williams Mtn. clear over to various places in the White Mtns. Neat-o stuff.

You can also use your favorite search engine and type in:

arizona snotel

You will get a lot of interesting links and probably stay up half the night investigating them.

The USGS started trying to provide real time flow info back in the days of the dawn of the Internet. They keep getting better and better and better. They remind me of the energizer bunny. The National Weather Service also links to the USGS stuff through a different URL:

The above URL puts all the Arizona basins in a simple table.
If you don't know which basin you are looking for check:

I am a big fan of 'real time' data. I was looking at Ed Phillip's weather stuff this morning and was intrigued by this link:

YOu have to ignore a lot of this webpage but the meat of it looks like the TV station teamed with APS to provide genuine realtime & webcam data for various places around Arizona. I'd hazard a guess those webcams are bolted up on top of APS offices in those locations.

Maybe other readers can use this thread to post their favorite weather/water/snow links for Arizona and then maybe Joe can review them all and make a hiker-oriented weather page on this wonderful website. Right, Joe? 8)
