Malapais Mountain via Peters Canyon 2/19/12
Posted: Feb 17 2012 4:08 pm
Meet at the parking lot behind Tortilla Flat restaurant at 7:00am, Sunday Feb., 19th. We'll follow Nonot's track (http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=6712&SD=2) up Peter's Canyon until we get somewhere near Peter's Mesa. From there we'll work our way across Peter's Mesa and pick up Wally's track (http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=11320) to the top of Malapais Mountain. On the way up Malapais I would like to take a side trip down Deering Canyon if it looks possible.
The return leg can be decided later. We can return via Teva Joe's route (http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=7120) or we could take Peter's Trail to Dutchman to Cavalry to Boulder Canyon to Canyon Lake TH. From there we can walk or hitchhike 2.2 miles back to Tortilla Flat.
Warning: I'm not 100% sure if this route is going to work since I have never been all the way up Peter's Canyon before. Last time I was in Peter's Canyon I was stopped by a large pool about 1/2 mile or so past the cave. It may be possible to bypass this pool on creek right but I didn't try. I'm going to bring a trail-boat with me and, using some rope or heavy fishing line, we can ferry it back and forth.
Don't forget that Monday is a holiday (Washington's birthday observed) so you will have an extra day to rest.
