It's a very good camera.
However I'd go with the the Canon S100 for hiking.
Being that it's nearly half the weight and bulk of the G12 makes a huge difference IMO.

Ha! Joe Bartels beat me to it. This was I was writing while he posted his comment
I have the G11. From what I've read on the interweb, the G12 isn't too much more improved, more of a G11.5. I believe its the same sensor.
I think, in its time, it was one of the best compact cameras, but if I dropped it on a rock and had to stay in that price range, I'd look for something else. Its reliable and I like its handling, but its heavy. I would consider the s100 over the g12, for example, and just deal with the lack of grip and some other missing/degraded features.

I've had mine since January and am happy with it, but when I saw the S100 I felt a little bit of buyer's remorse because of the size difference. I try not to think about that...

I have a G10 that I like for hiking except for its weight. In Dec'11 for my X-Mas, I was debating between the s95 and s100 (which replaced the s95). I decided to go with the s95 (that I'm happy with) because there were discounted s95 units available back then and the new s100 was pricey with no discounts.
Here is a believable review on the s100 by professional photographer Ken Rockwell..
http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/s100.htm This little camera is loaded and also with a full 3x3 LCD display. It is lacking zoom capability if "tibber-mode" is important to you.

I love my G9. It will take one heck of a breakthrough in DSLR size/Weight to make me move off of it. Go for it!
