If you win the $640mil MegaMillions jackpot tonight, where will you go hiking next? I'll probably just pay for a helicopter ride to the top of Everest...

I don't know where I'll go but I know I will never clean house again!
There are a lot of places I'd like to see: Alaska, Nepal, New Zealand, Africa, etc. But having all that money might tempt a you to put a buffer between yourself and the real world. Luxury resorts, cruise ships and all that.
I feel really lucky to be living in the
real Costa Rica right now. No English, no air conditioning, no hot water, and you have to put your toilet paper into a trash basket. Yes, really. I didn't tell you guys about any of that, did I? Rice and beans three times a day, along with whatever else is served. Yeah, I whine about it occasionally, but I really wouldn't have it any other way.

It has been done, but I'm sure it was just the pilot in the cockpit. They stripped everything non essential and flew up on minimum fuel. The highest rescue I think was Beck Weathers and that was quite a bit lower.

Hiking? If I won the lottery, I'd get one of those really expensive hobbies I can't afford

The really cool millionaires are the ones who don't show it. Most expensive hobbies always sound kind of boring to me.

I would keep 2 million give the rest to charity. Buy a jeep and finally hit some of the more remote hikes. Invest in my aquaponics nonprofit... Honestly can't even think much bigger than that, that's why the rest would be to charity. Wendi however wants 2 more homes, well three cause she would get out from under our current home, probably an island (my suggestion), RV, Kayaks (me, again) and done.

At this point we know we all didn't win, but if I won, my "next" hike would be the one I planned for this sunday.
In a larger sense, where WOULDN'T I hike (in general) might be a more appropriate question. I think that applies for pretty much everyone here. We would all probably be multi-millionaire semi-homeless people who would prefer to spend the majority of our time on the trails rather than in a McMansion in a primo new subdivision. The only real luxury that money really buys is the time to not have to spend at a desk/counter/register/etc.

One thing I would never do is go to a job with a boss, ever again. Never, ever again. No way, José.
One thing we haven't discussed is whether you'd want people to know you had won. I think I would rather keep it quiet. Of course, if you won this particular lottery, you'd be in the world news, and then all the sharks would be at your door. You'd have to hide from them. People would figure out things to sue you for, also, just to get some of that money. If you won a smaller lottery, probably easier to hide that fact from the general population. In fact, I think if I won, let's say, two million bucks, I'd try to keep it under my hat as much as possible, and go on living my normal life (without working for any bosses, of course...

).
Even if I gave a lot to charity, I'd make sure I kept enough to live on the rest of my life, and from what I hear, you have to be pretty frugal to live on a million or two million for the rest of your life, because it is tempting to buy all those houses and RVs and travel to all those exotic places. That is why there is a long history of people winning the lottery who are dead broke within 5 years. Because they got greedy, and didn't figure out how to make the money work for them, if, let's say, they won only a million or two. Plus, I would want to be able to leave some to my kids.
I wouldn't want houses all over the place. Then you have upkeep, you have to hire people to take care of them. If you like to travel and want a house to stay in, there are always houses available to rent, or nice hotels, etc. Houses are like weights around the neck. Plus, then you are stuck always vacationing in the same places.
It's fun to dream!

I'd leave Kayenta and never ever return. The hiking would be secondary.

I was a dollar richer yesterday. So now I can drive 5 fewer miles to get to whatever trailhead I'm going to.

If I'd have won the lottery, my next hike wouldn't have changed (trekking in the Indian Himalaya). However, the trip would probably be more like 3 months than 3 weeks, and I'd be sure that my hubby wouldn't ever have to work another day in his life. Instead, he would happily spend his days tinkering with the old cars, fixing the plumbing and watching fishing shows on tv. I don't get it either.

In Costa Rica, if you want a lottery ticket, you buy it on the street, from a hawker. They walk around everywhere, but especially where there are a lot of people. But they also just walk through the neighborhoods, hollering. They hold the tickets in their hands, big sheafs of them.

I'm going revive this thread since the Powerball is now up to
$550 million
($360 million pre-tax cash value).
I think I'll donate $2 to the state fund. If nothing else, it may help state parks and conservation efforts.
And if things go my way, HAZ may receive a sizeable donation in the near future!
