handheld GPS compass gone wrong

I have a Garmin GPSmap 60csx and lately I've been having problems with the compass. The unit is tracking the movements accurately, but the black arrow is often pointing the wrong direction which is a total pain because of the orientation of the screen. I've tried to calibrate the compass and it keeps saying it has failed. Any ideas?

Have you tried going in a circle slower and faster during the compass calibration?

Have you tried a hard reset? You turn on the unit with Enter & Page pressed. Save any data you want to keep before the reset. You should lose all the data if the unit is working properly with a hard reset.

If I understood what you said, I would do it with my 60CX. But I don't get it. (I seldom do.)

FWIW, the compass is a big power drain. I leave mine off and use an old-fashioned compass.

yeah, I've circled at a bunch of different speeds. I'm trying to avoid the hard reset. I really don't want to lose all the settings I've changed :(

Is your 60CSX in power save mode. I noticed the compass acts funny when I am in powersave mode, but returns to normal when I switch back to normal .
