A 16-year-old Boy Scout from Utah drowned at Mooney Falls Wednesday afternoon during a hiking trip with his troop through Supai Canyon. . . .

Harrison was swimming with three other boys in the pool below Mooney Falls when he was sucked under by the current, according to Sheriff’s office officials. Another boy attempted to pull Harrison above the water, but was almost sucked under as well.

One of the other boys said they were attempting to swim under or near the actual falls at the time. The water was described as about five feet deep with a strong undercurrent.

This is very sad and hits close to home. I was at Supai last fall and was pulled under a small waterfall just below Mooney. Luckily it was only about 8' tall but it still was powerful enough. I wasn't expecting the water to drop off so suddenly. Thank goodness I came back up. The last thing I remember thinking was that my daughter most likely watched me go under. I could only imagine the power underneath Mooney.

I will never underestimate even a small waterfall again.
