Reading up on Everest I came across an interesting couple of lines...
There is a significantly lower overall mortality rate for permanent residents at higher altitudes. One exception to this trend is that people living at higher elevations have a statistically significant higher rate of suicide.

I believe the studies linking a lower mortality to altitude involved lower cancer rates among that population as opposed to a general statement about longevity and health, if that matters.
