I disagree with the part about waiting for a close space not being due to laziness. Personally, I'd rather park on Mars, then walk, simply to lessen the possibility of some yahoo slamming their car door into my vehicle ... ;)

Walking around my neighborhood is certainly not my most favorite hike in the world.

This is where I consider myself extremely lucky. I don't have a neighborhood. I have a route that takes me out 2.6 miles from my house, and I can either do a dirt road or follow the powerlines that invoke hills and ridges to climb. If I do the powerlines, it takes a little over an hour to go out and back, and my legs are jelly when I get back. I can't wait to hit this trail when it cools off just a little more. (Yeah, I'm a whimp, not in that good of shape yet, but I work in an office all day with AC). The other thing I do is have my van pool drop me off at the turn around point on this trail, and I walk it home. At any rate, if that's all you can do today, that's still better than nothing. ;)

No, it is almost definitely laziness the majority of the time! Apparently he has never been to a Walmart!

I guess I'm in the minority. I'm happy to walk in the neighborhood, even a somewhat industrial area, if I don't have time to get anywhere nicer. Any kind of walking feels better than none.

I'm very lucky, as is Te-Wa and anyone else in the Red Mountain/Las Sendas area. In less than 1/2 mile I'm on the Hawes trail system and away from all but mnt bike traffic.

As long as we're bragging about our neighborhood hiking options, if I go over the back fence I'm in the country's largest municipal park and can hook up to 51 miles of trail. ;)

In Page I loved hiking the neighborhood. I guess it is all about location location location.

I don't mind walking in my neighborhood and it's sometimes very entertaining. You never know what these old folks will do or say. Sometimes I just can't get to a trail due to my work schedule and I know that ANY kind of exercise is better than none at all so I will walk a couple of miles in the 'hood. For many of our seniors, especially those with cardiac problems, they can't take the heat so in the summer they walk laps around the mall.

So true Trishness! I even found myself walking the mall in Tucson a couple of weeks ago, to kill time - and to get some miles on my legs. I absolutely HATE going to town, so I made the best of it and got some exercise in the process.

I do the same thing when I'm in town. I park out where no one else wants to. I've also read if you have to park by other cars, pick one that's a newer, nicer, more expensive one. Chances are, that person is less apt to hit your car with theirs. I've tried this, and it seems to work.
