Tibber and I actually saw this on our way to the Rim on Friday 08-24-12. I was driving but glanced over to the Ancha ridgeline and said "does that look like a fire to you?" We both agreed that it did. Then we came back the same way one Sunday and it appeared to still be burning. Seems to be a pretty remote area but it sure has grown from the 400 acres it was on Sunday.

An excessive heat warning is in effect until Wednesday night. Additional resources arrived at the fire today and received job assignments. Approximately 375 personnel are assigned to the incident and the fire is 10 percent contained. Crews are working to protect structures on the south and southeast sides of the fire. A temporary closure to ensure firefighter and public safety is in place."
This active fire within the Tonto Basin area- "Sierra Ancha Mountains" is now very close to the area where a number of HAZ "off trail" hike descriptions are located (including the hikes: Malicious Gap, Bear Head Mountain Loop - Sierra Ancha, Copper Mtn Points - Lower/Upper, and the Oak Creek Loop - Greenback Valley).
For fire location reference to the above listed HAZ hike descriptions, here is the Cal Topo map link (the
red route line is the driving route
from Hwy 188
to end at the Malicious Gap TH. All other hike descriptions noted start just off this driving route at or near the driving route end..
