Aravaipa Overnighter - Aug 25th

I have three additional overnight permits for Aravaipa for the west entrance on Saturday, August 25th. Is anyone interested in coming along? The plan will be to leave Phoenix around 6am on Saturday and drive to the trailhead. From there we’ll hike in a few miles and will set up camp. We’ll explore or do whatever. I’d like to check out some of the side canyons but I don’t have a set agenda. We’ll hike out on Sunday and will return to Phoenix.
Yes it’s going to be hot. I don’t want to get into a debate over the temps. We’ll be hiking in the creek so it shouldn’t be too bad. Wading will be required for this hike. Does anyone want to come with? I’m prepared to go solo but would love some company.

It ran pretty good about two weeks ago....keep flash floods in mind
I'd love to go, but too many other obligations in the way.

I'm going in on Oct 13, my first trip in and only for a day.

Have fun!

Put me in the definitely interested. Not just JimH's "intriguing but there's really no chance I'll go interested".
It may come down to me securing a proper backpacking tent since mine is now in somebody elses possession and they have yet to reveal themselves by putting it on craigslist or ebay.

I hope you can go. I have a tent you can borrow if needed. It's a tad bit heavy but will work. It's a North Face 2 man tent...Tadpole model. Let me know if you want to borrow it. Keep in mind we don't need to haul much water nor any warm clothes for this one.

I have a Big Agnes Seedhouse one person backpacking tent you can borrow if you need to. Is not the SL but only weighs like 3 pounds. Let me know.
;)

I may be interested in this, but will have to wait and make a decision last minute due to other things at home. I'm not even going to put myself in interested. If you fill all of the Permits that's great. I'll go another time, but if you don't, and I can get away, I'll jump in with both feet....

it's filling up quickly. i'm hesitant because of the weather. it's not the ideal time of year for this trip.

There is still one last permit available. I'll post up some details on meeting up and carpooling. I'm thinking we can meet at a Walmart off the 60. The cars will be fine there for a day and a half. I'm open to suggestions for other meetup locations as well. Of course you can meet us at the trailhead if your coming from Tucson or other parts of Az.

Hey John,
I just walked down to the Aravaipa where Highway 77 crosses it (I live about 100 yards from there) - it's running nearly bank to bank there, and muddy. We've had 3 significant rain events in the last three days, the last one this morning between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. on that mountain range.
That's all I can offer you, I have no idea how long it will take to go down. Maybe suggest if you decide to come on, is to go to the bridge and check before driving all the way up to the trailhead.
Good luck!
Kate

Thanks for the info Kate! It's especially helpful to know that you live nearby if we need to set up tents in a backyard instead of along the creek ;)

You could do that! Except for this weekend, I will not be home!
Anyway, Liz posted a link in the rain thread (forgot the actual title) - this shows flow rates of the creek.
http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/uv?cb ... o=09473000
anyway, I knew y'all had a hike planned, so I thought I would go check after I got off work. Maybe that link can show you the rate it's changing, and you can decide from there whether to come or not....I'd sure hate to see you all make a drive up here if you can't go up the canyon. That would reek!!

Yeah, I have been monitoring the streamflow data. It peaked higher than any flow in the past couple of years! But it appears to recede very quickly. Just a matter of hours.
It's always good to have a firsthand account though. Thanks for the info!

I assumed you had been watching, but you know what assume spells!! I will not be able to go check tomorrow, I'm leaving too early. I hope you still get to go play in the mud! Have a safe and fun trip if you do, and I can't wait to see pics!

Hey Kate, thanks for checking! That is very helpful for us. We'll keep an eye on the flow rate and will come up with a backup plan just in case.

Also, my friend that lives next to the canyon says they're having a crazy rattlesnake season. Be extra careful!
