Alamo Peak Observatory: Off Trail!

This is a long, hard hike when you start down in town and follow the official routes and trails. Instead, we plan to stay off the trails, follow the natural canyon routes up to the upper ridges, then hit the peak from the north side... the upper portions will be entirely exploratory. It could get interesting. The mileage will likely be around 20... with 5,000' of climbing and descending. Folks should be in shape and carrying everything necessary for being off trail, dealing with Fall/Winter weather... and possibly having to finish in the dark?

The route is up through Caballero Canyon North... we start at 8am at the Alamo Canyon Trailhead (t104) in Alamogordo.

Again: the upper portion is exploratory... we have not hiked this area before!
