Aravaipa Emergency System

I was at the Aravaipa Property Owners meeting yesterday afternoon, and one of the folks, a ex-Navy pilot, let us know that he has been working with various authorities to put up some antenna's on a few mountains so that anyone with the appropriate "walk-talky" would be able to call for help from within the canyon (where cell phones don't work). The antenna will be sited so that all the nooks and crannies have coverage. Details to follow in the months ahead ...

Also - there is an independent emergency service that is working to get a fire station installed near the college on Aravaipa Road. They have laid down the blacktop to the area they plan for the station. They have been having local meetings to get the community support to justify the expense of installing the fire station. Some folks fall under the Dudleyville fire district (myself included), and we have been approached to voluntarily withdraw from Dudleyville in favor of this closer service. Right now it is in the planning stage, the local rancher has agreed to donate the land. More to come...

I'd be curious just what they would call an 'appropriate' radio for that kinda system. It wouldn't be legal to set up any kind of repeater system for FRS channels, and GMRS repeaters aren't something accessible by the average bubble pack radio at Walmart either (and they require licenses anyway.) Ham would be the logical choice, and as a ham myself, a welcome addition, but I'd imagine usage would be limited to the point of not being terribly useful to 99.9999% of visitors.

Radio nerds with inquiring minds want to know! :)

Edit: I suppose some kinda one-way monitoring system would be feasible on any and all of the above services. Kinda like SPOT though, you wouldn't have any verifiable confirmation that your message got out. *ponders some more*

I don't know what kind of system they are using, but it is all being done via the appropriate government channels. He did specifically mention it would be accessible via "walkie talkie". He mentioned the band, but I don't recall exactly. (VHF? UHF? Not AM or FM.) There will be four channels. That's all I know for now ...
