That's a shame.
Do you know where this "Ice Box Canyon" area is?
That's the exact same way that the climber on the Hart Route was killed a few years back - fell off because he was attacked by bees.
Scary.
Bees scare me more than any other creature in the desert, because they are so unpredictable ...

This is very sad and my heart goes out to the family of the hiker who fell as well as his hiking partners. :(

But I think I recall a story from 3-4 yrs ago (maybe it was more yrs than that) of some climbers on Camelback that encountered a nest of stinging bees. It could have been Echo Canyon area but I'm not certain.

Thats the one I was talking about - it was on the Hart Route.

To me qualifies as just a few years. The prospect of an attack with limited options to flee is frightening.

News said that Ice Box is off of the Echo Canyon trail. Very sad situation.

There was the one in 2004, but looks like a minor incident in 2010 too.

Here is another article from the New Times (specifically on yesterday's attack) that provides more geographic detail:

Very close to the Hart Route - seems like that is a troublesome area.

Haven't a few HAZers posted pics of a Bee Hive up there somewhere? Wonder if it's the same area. Seems like the Hive has been there for a couple of years at least.....I just don't remember who posted the last picture of it.....

there was mention a few months ago by the area between the rails - marked with a yellow flag
Not sure what "Icebox" canyon is... guessing - marked with yellow diamond

So sad to hear this, per the link on the Phx New Times story, the guy who fell was only 19.
On the Camelback climbing map, there is no Ice Box Canyon but there is a 5.9 route called IceBox.

Is the "Camelback climbing map" online somewhere?

@paulshikleejr
Assuming she's refering to Marty Karabin's foldout map, it's available to buy for about $5 at REI.

resurrecting this post because i read on mountain project that a climber was attacked by bees on monday
bailed off the hart route, leaving all of his gear
250+ stings
nothing in the news that i can find
the "bees in the area" signs are posted at the trailhead, but didn't see any on tuesday

in the same forum, someone noted that there was a swarm or a hive in the west chimney on weaver's needle
he rapped down in a hurry, leaving his rope
bee careful out there
