Heading down Grandview to Tonto and camping at Grapevine. The following night we will be along the Tonto trail. What are my odds of finding somewhere to hang along those routes? Are there any restrictions on hanging from vegetation? Thanks in adavance.

i dont know of any written restrictions about hanging. a bunch of HF ppl looked into it, found nothing. Phantom ranch being the exception.

not always, there are about 30 hangers on HAZ. trouble is, they're out hanging not sitting here like me and you..

There are a few large trees where the Tonto crosses Grapevine, but it's not a large grove as best I recall, my guess is that hanging there would be possible but not certain. This photo shows the crossing, the trees visible on the left side are typical of what I remember, although there are more of them further upstream.

I've done the entire Tonto and generally speaking the chances are even slimmer, without lots of constant water there just isn't much of anything bigger than brush. Cottonwood Creek is relatively lush, but it sounds like you don't have a permit there. I'd strongly recommend having a ground-based backup plan.

I thought about that. Never used them before but I am sure The Hiking Shack could give me the lowdown.

Cams would be kind of expensive for this job.

i would take Todd's advice, as he is an avid Hanger. asking a non-hanger if there are trees is probably inversely proportionate to asking a hanger if there are flat spots.

i did hang in Monument and saw trees in other canyons between Hermit and Kaibab - one spot in particular (could have been a pocket, not so much a named canyon) had a group of 8-10 perfectly spaced trees.

I guess will get creative. I will take pictures.

I appreciate the offer. I just read about just wedging rocks into the cracks and wrapping some webbing from that. Seems like a lighter option then carrying cams.

Um, this may seem way Neanderthal, but how about just bringing a Neoair pad and sleeping on the ground?

I normally do, but I am eager to try out my new hammock and Te-Wa quilt.

FYI for future trips.

Cottonwood Creek- Ideal for hangers.
Grapevine Creek- Less then ideal. Hangable with creative methods (possibly using boulder and a tree or wall and a tree).
Boulder Creek- A fair amount of trees and more ideal for hanging.
Lonetree Creek- Possible to hang from tree and rock wall but would take a fair amount of creativity. Most difficult place along this route.
