KANAB, Utah -- A 27-year-old Arizona woman who was hiking a popular southern Utah trail with her husband has died after getting lost in the high desert.
Kane County Emergency Services officials said Elisabeth Ann Bervel of Mesa died after hiking the Wave rock formation on Monday.
Deputies said Bervel and her husband had won permits to hike the restricted area seven months ago, and took the trek to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.
Officials said the couple lost the trail a few times on the way back, and Bervel became fatigued. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene about 2 p.m., but officials said Bervel was in cardiac arrest by the time rescuers arrived and died.
The cause is under investigation.
Deputies said the Bervels have two sons, ages 4 and 5.
