Never been here. Been spending too much time celebrating the AZWBC opening and need to work off some liquid calories. It's still too hot for me in the desert.
Leaving the valley at 0600. Looking to follow
Bruce's track of Nelson 159 to Willow Spring 12 to Verde Rim 161 to Nelson 150 to Shortcut 166 to Pine Flat 165 to Nelson 159. I honestly don't know what any of that means but it looks nice on the map. Just under 14 miles. Seems like it'll be a typical day during the Arizona monsoon. Warm, humid, chance of showers.

Mind if I tag along on this? Wouldn't hurt me at all to see a new area, and hiking in temps below 100 could be a nice change.

Don't mind at all. That's why I posted it as an event.

I am 90% certain I am a "go". Question - meeting at the trailhead or somewhere in the valley for a carpool?

TBD. Probably don't need to show up in 4 vehicles. Will figure out the details by tomorrow evening.

Wondering about carpooling myself. I'm in southeast Scottsdale right off the 101 and McDowell, if that matters.

Just an FYI - I was headed into that area last Saturday, but with all the rains the road was covered in a layer of unbelievable sticky mud which immediately filled in all my tire treads and coated the wheel wells of my AWD Subaru. Never seen a mud+rock consistency quite like that before. After a couple miles of sliding around I retreated, and probably scraped 100 lbs of crud off when I got back to the pavement.

I'm want to go but I won't know if I have to work until about 4pm tomorrow. I don't have a problem take people up but I'll be going into Payson after the hike so I can't bring anyone back to the valley.
As for the mud... I'll push my truck in until it makes it or til it's stuck

Any concerns with the road conditions? Per toddak's post and searching the web, it looks like wet conditions make travel difficult. Looks as if it may be raining up there today.

Not too concerned. I like mud. If it gets to be too much of a pain, we'll find something else.
