What Camping is Open in Payson?

Due to the government shutdown my anniversary plans for next week have gone astray. We were planning on camping and had reservations at Houston Mesa campground the 18-20. I have heard mixed reports, but I think it's currently closed.

Is there any good TENT camping in the Payson area that is still open with all these recent closures? We just need running water and a toilet would be nice, but not necessary.

We live in Mesa and are open to other suggestions!

I believe that anything with running water and a toilet is closed. You can dispersed camp, but you will lose those two options, and if you aren't familiar with where to go, you might end up driving random forest roads for a long time trying to find an appropriate spot.

The one option is the single campground in Payson that is privately owned, not operated by the Feds (think KOA). There are 34 tent-only camp sites, but you'll be close to town, and will be sharing the area with RVs as well.

But it can't hurt to give them a call!

Had friends stay at this place in the past and they enjoyed it. When I tent camp and use the large tent (12x12) and stay in a campground that offers electric, I use a small space heater. My large tent camp includes sleeping on a large cot and the space heater is placed on a small table.
