The above link is to my planned section, for Saturday, the 19th. I hope it goes well.
As part of my fall hiking program, I am planning on doing sections of the Rim Trail, in the Sacramento Mts. I will break it into sections, and my first planned section runs from Cloudcroft to the paved road up Alamo Canyon. Appears that one other road, Carr Canyon, is paved and is crossed just before the turn around point. Options to proceed to Alamo Peak will be retained and decided upon when we reach the road.
Stats show that this segment, round trip, will be nearly 23 1/2 miles, with 3,150' of accumulated elevation gain, due to the rolling terrain. This hike is a bit off of my usual AEG over miles, but I want to explore it before it gets too cold up high. The mid-week forecast for Saturday says it should be in the lower 50s, but sunny or mostly sunny and nearly calm, for elevations between 8500 and 9100'. Most of the hike is in the higher 8,000s.
From Dog Canyon to Sunspot on Tuesday the 15th, the color is peaking in the maples, and a bit past in the aspen.
Plan on 10 hours or more of sustained fast paced hiking. Not beginner friendly, but I am fine with dogs. Pack food and water (3 + liters) and clothes accordingly.
We can meet at Walmart, or up in Cloudcroft. Meet at 8 in Alamo, about 830 in CC.
So, moved to the 19th, Saturday.
