Shameless Self Promotion

At the risk of seeming any more crass than I can possibly be, here are two photos the 2011-2012 winter, which I find particularly enjoyable.

All the recent snow in Colorado has me thinking, "to snowshoe, or not to snowshoe?", that is the question.

42 inch base at Durango Mountain resort, near where these were taken, and I have that temporary itch to brighten my hikes with bright white snow. Humphrey? No, too far and done to death. It isn't something that needs doing again when so far away. Colorado? Maybe.

Would this fly as an event?

While I can enjoy the photos, I am extremely happy to be where I am right now.

I hear ya. I would have to get back out into real cold, to see how I feel about it. Then again, once for up to 8 hours is usually OK when prepared.

Do I smell HAZfest Winter 2014?

Shameless self-promotion would be saying "check out this link! Only one person has over 300k AEG with under 1000 miles hiked!" (Not to mention, the next person up has hiked over 500 miles more to get there)

And I believe that I hold the haz-crown for being more crass (this statement also qualifies as shameless self-promotion :) ), so I suggest you actually post an event and see what happens, rather than posting about the possibility of posting an event to determine if you should actually post an event. ;)

Seriously though, I think you might have some takers if not for the geographical challenges some of us face in getting to Colorado. Some of us like the snow more than others.

It's -6 with a high forecast of 10. Just stopped snowing last night and there is a good 6-8 inches of dry champagne powder in the back yard.

Well, I won't know until my schedule comes out, but an early January 2014 event could be fun. Depends on my many moods, though. Happy, Sad, Impish.

I am proud of my 310,000' for the year. Might make 325,000' if I push it. More likely is somewhere between 320,000' and 325,000' without going over. It may hinge on whether or not I am able to summit Organ Needle this Sunday. Smaller, training hikes that add in 1400' are easy to get, it's the bigger 3 to 4000' hikes that make the big totals, and they're harder this time of year.

Hey, I did over 310,000' with out even being over 900 miles!

One other issue, is I strongly prefer calm to calmish, bluebird days, after avalanche hazard subsides. Those are very, very hard to plan for more than a few days out.

Well, who wants to drive hundreds, or a thousand miles, and have overcast, stormy, or bad weather. I like this:

That guy had fabulous weather.

Jura Knob. It should be an early 2014 HAZ winter-fest summit peak. That, or snowshoe the tundra around it.

Some meetup group (Colorado based) photos of a hike up Jura Knob, to give an idea of what the area looks like in Summer. It would be winter, obviously, but you get the idea. The cliffs are the hardest part of the hike

How 'bout Sentinel Point?

I'm sure there is a little more snow on it after last weeks' precip and cold temps. Snow was 6-12" in the trees on the way up. You probably saw this from a different angle when you did the Crags unless the visibility sucked.

You mean for an event or fest? It looks fun, but not a lot of shoeing in that area, unless up on the Pike's Massif. How is access over there?
