True. The MSP is only open from sunrise to sunset. Rules also expressly prohibit hiking off any established trail. The penalty for both violations is a Class 2 Misdemeanor. I think there is a fair amount of leniency in the time just before and after sunset. In fact, the gates are opened 30 minutes prior to sunrise daily, so you'd think that is a reasonable assumption that it's ok. But all it takes is a neighbor to call, and the police will respond. That's their job, and it's difficult to plead ignorance with the rules so well posted.
