What some are calling the Extra Supermoon

Rising at 7:14pm from the East Southeast (102*)

The Moon will only be 221,765 miles away!
It will appear 16 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual.

It will also mess with our ability to view the Perseids.

But it will make tides more extreme, so I recommend heading for the beach. But not in Mexico, where your head may end up on the beach.

To heck with the full moon...it messes with night sky viewing (and meteor showers), plus sort of sucks if you're camping.

A complex series of smoke and mirrors, lenses, levers and pullies. Sometimes referred to as a telescope.

Ideal for improved viewing of celestial bodies.

looking at the moon through a telescope is like staring into the sun... not recommended.

While staring at the moon can be uncomfortably bright, it is nothing like staring into the sun. The sun can (and will) cause permanent damage to your eyes. The moon can't. Big difference there.

Found a regular old pair of binoculars works well for looking at the moon too. Will have to dig through my pack this weekend and retrieve them.

When looking through a telescope it can damage your eyes. You see, my friend-- its sunlight being reflected off the moon

That's impossible. Cheese melts when it's in the sun.

I'm no astrophysicist or ophthalmologist, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, and subsequently know that it's more likely you harm your eyes by viewing some photos posted on HAZ recently than staring at a full moon.

In any case, if you want to look at the moon through a telescope, I think it's much more interesting in the few days before and after a new moon when the shadows better highlight the terrain.
