Glad I don't live there,sounds like there is only one place to hike.
But then again when I go downtown Phoenix I carry a gun.

Hahahaha....I love the very last line...Diane Whipple was not attacked by a Herding Breed of Guard Dog...Technically, they may be in the Herding Breed category, but 99% of that Breed of Dog is no longer used for Herding, at least in the U.S...It's not even a fair comparison to relate those Dogs to what is Guarding Sheep in the San Juans...I understand the Fear and it is a problem, but it sounds like between the Ranchers and the FS, they are trying to work it out....

I've bumped into sheep dogs a couple of times a year when I lived in Idaho. All I can say is that they take their jobs seriously. One time the sheep moved into our camping area overnight while we were sleeping. So the herd was between the trailhead/camping area and a few people's cars. We ended up shuttling a couple of nervous hikers 200 yards in our car so that they could get around the dogs.
