Unfortunately, some people will shoot anything that's not another person.

I told my wife I could never kill any animal even if it bit me. Killing another person not so hard if they are low lifes. You know child molsters, animal abuser, bullies. :scared:

Not that it makes it right, but I'm wondering if it was a stray bullet. I haven't read anything indicating whether it was shot more than once.

This made me reflect on last June, when I did some work at China Lake NWS. We got some training on working in tortoise habitat, which culminated in a short test. It included instructions on what to do if you accidentally harmed a tortoise on base. The penalty for doing so intentionally was pretty steep. I can't imagine a fully mature person doing this, but the world is packed with less than fully mature people.

It's pretty hard to be that unlucky.

If it's by the Sycamore / Sugarloaf area...
from the Sugarloaf description
Many people may find this hike to be disturbing due to all the gunfire. I heard 22 cal, assault rifle, 50 caliber, shotguns and even a few sticks of dynamite in the short 3 hours this took.
Probably less activity in the summer. Seems a dead body was found there a decade or so ago too :scared:

@jochal
The first report that I heard was that the tortoise was shot at least 4 times
