Dec. 28 - Peralta

I'm doing Peralta at first light on Saturday the 28th. Those interested - speak now or forever hold your peace!

I'd like to go by way of the caves on the way down - so some may want to do that route on the way down, and others may just want to take the normal route down. Up to the individual I suppose.

Come if you can.

When you are referring to peralta, are you referring to the whole 12.6 mile round trip on the trail, or just the hike to the Fremont saddle? I am interested in these caves but dont boulder down very fast. Post some details of the alternate trail for us relative newbies ;]

We did this trip yesterday with the Cave Trail return.

If you've never done it:

It took us 5 hours 15 minutes with stops for lunch, snacks, photography, etc. We left the parking lot 11:45 AM and didn't see many people (about 15 at Fremont saddle).

On the Cave Trail we only saw 2 others and they were about 1/4 mile ahead of us. I'd suggest going with someone who knows the way. About 80% of the Cave Trail is unmarked and a lot of it goes over bare rock (no trail visible, you have to follow the cairns, maps, GPS). We had never gone with anyone before to show us the way and were equipped with map, compass and GPS with all the waypoints loaded into it. At 12 S 467123mE 3697068mN (the SE side of the mountain that contains the Geronimo Cave) there was no obvious way down so we just slid down on our butts! Also ran into a couple of dead-ends and had to back-track a few times. Lots of up and down. Cave Trail is rated "difficult" in the "Hiker's Guide to the Superstition Wilderness".

Think you were probably on Devil's slide. We went up it, using ropes that had been hauled up earlier, on the Don's Trek last March.
