He's alive. Seems like a good outcome to me.
The guy survived a grizzly attack because his hunting partner killed the bear. In the process he took some friendly fire and now he's recovering.
Decisions and actions relating to life and death situations are not always straightforward. If I was the guy recovering right now, I'd be pretty happy to have had a hunting partner with me. Not complaining about some lead in my thigh.

I would love to tell that story instead of the time my friend threw a .22 bullet in the campfire. I managed to turn around it before it went off and it hit me in the butt.
He still says, "Remember that time I shot you in the butt?"
*there was no penetration...

He probably would not have been complaining either if the Bullet had penetrated his Femoral Artery...You can say what you want, but if he had been Shot anywhere in his Core or Head, you can bet he wouldn't have survived it on top of the Bear induced Injuries...He was in Critical Condition as it was...But, you know, we weren't there and maybe more details will come out later...I just think it's a little Tragic that the guy has to endure a Gunshot Wound on top of everything else and I think it could have been prevented somehow...But in the Heat of the Moment, who knows how one will react and what they will do...

That old saying that if you shoot a king you'd better kill him comes to mind.
Since the partner killed the bear and the victim is alive, it's definitely a positive outcome.

A warning regarding this practice or stupidity of throwing 22 ammunition into a campfire. It is not the lead that is going to take out your eye or lodge in your butt but the shell casing which as a result of the explosion expands and becomes a very dangerous flying piece of shrapnel. It can tear through your clothing and cause a jagged bloody wound that will be hard to clean, disinfect and bandage.

:stretch:
If it was a birdshot bullet the shot will spray across your body and the pellets that are not stopped by clothing may remain under your skin for years to come.

That's why I just shoot the fire with my gun. It keeps the explosion in the safety of the chamber, and only a chunk of child-safe lead ends up in the coals. Plus everybody likes the boom sound and the spray of sparks as the rocks and debris ricochet around inside the fire ring.

So what is your alternate targets? Trail signs and wrecked automobiles?
