Next weekend. May 16-17. Chevelon Canyon.

Telephone Trail #103. Easy hike down to the creek. Camp site dependent on availability. It could be 1.5 miles. Might be 3 miles if other people are there.

Fishing is optional but hopefully somebody will catch dinner and share :D
(Note: Chevelon Creek has a 2 Trout limit)

Day hike to the lake is 3-4 miles one-way. Upstream can be explored as far as you want. Or you can sit in a grassy meadow and relax next to Chevelon Creek. Fishing is optional.

I might drive up Friday night and camp near TH but really only plan to be at the creek on Saturday and hike out Sunday afternoon.

Getting to this TH REQUIRES high clearance. (Alternately you may hike up to 1.75mi additional on the road)

I just went last weekend, so unlikely I can make it next. I spotted this nice spot with wooden couch upstream, south, about 2 miles. Some other guys were building their own just downstream from this spot. Both had big deep trout laden holes next to them. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=496632
This spot may not be available since it is so close to the trail coming down the hill from 237. Everyone I saw had hiked down from 237, no one from Telephone ridge but me. Have you ever been the 237 route? I asked one of the guys and he said it was as rough as the last part of 119.

we call it "catch and release", homey.

this area used to be fairly unknown. i would hate for the masses to start flocking there as the fishing pressure would eliminate all those big browns in short time. so DON'T GO!! THIS PLACE SUCKS, AND THERE ARE NO FISH AND BADGERS WITH RABIES.

@te-wa
I'm more worried about squirrels with rabies.

Was just at Chevelon yesterday... it's gorgeous there right now. The big pool right by the campsites closest to the trail was full of fish, but they were some kind of bottom feeder/sucker fish. We didn't spot any trout but hopefully they were just hanging out in the other big pools we didn't check out.

Snow level forecast to drop to lake level on Friday night. Moisture is limited so not much is expected, but there may be some light accumulation to kick things off Saturday morning :)

Apparently Hikebot is attending and is far more cultured than me because this event is now being advertised with grapes, wine and cheese. I only knew about the fishing and the beer. :-k

The weather forecast has me opting out of the possible Friday night arrival. I don't need to sit in a tent for 15 hours enjoying the pitter-patter of steady rain transition into the silence of falling snow (as cool as that is, I've done it before and don't need to do it tomorrow!)

So I expect to arrive Saturday for a chilly afternoon in the 40s, a warm fire for grilling fresh trouts in the evening, and what should be a very pleasant day on Sunday reaching the low 60s.

I think Hikebot feeds on the untapped potential of couch potatoes.

@Chumley Good call. GH and I are currently camped near rim of East Clear Creek about 30 miles south of Winslow. It's cold, windy and been raining for last 2 hours with no sign of stopping. GH is hold up in his tent but I'm dry and warm reading a book in the FJ. Maybe we'll wake up.to snow.

You should come by and Say hi tomorrow. We will be there before noon unless the snow is too deep on the rim as we head north. :D
