OK, that would REALLY be cool if I could use it to slow down some of the fast talkers I know (eg. my wife and daughter)
Took Route Scout for a trial on my morning hike today. Had much faster map download and gps sync to required accuracy than the previous HAZ gps. I live in an area with weak cell signal. I was standing outside my front door so maybe it was still linked to my wireless for map download? After map download with map zoomed out for area I would be hiking in I switched to airplane mode. Was pleased to find map could be zoomed in and had topo detail in airplane mode - something that wasn't working for me with the old HAZ gps - maybe I just hadn't figured out how to use the old one. Very pleased with this new gps version. Second impression - yes! this is a winner. Thanks, Joe.

As with HAZ Tracks the "Device only" is the only Location Mode setting that Route Scout works in on a 1st generation Motorola Moto X.

I'm waiting for the Moto X Pure Edition to come out Sep 3rd. Not sure what you mean by "device only" location mode :-k ? Guess I'll have to go back on the Forum where you discussed the Moto X to see how the HAZTracks and now the new Route Scout works with it.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

@tibber
You change location modes at settings>Location>Mode>Device only. Speaking of "Not sure what you mean", what is this Moto X Pure Edition of which you speak? BTW, do you own either a 1st or 2nd generation Moto X? If so, can you run HAZ Tracks or Route Scout in "High accuracy" mode as Joe B advises?

I forgot to mention a key issue in my Moto X problem. My Moto X uses a proprietary version of Android which is the required operating system of Republic Wireless, my cell phone service provider.

Thank you for info.
Pure Edition is the new Moto X, not tied to any carrier. I'll just insert my current sim? card for Tmobile so I hope there won't be any issues or I'll have to get another phone as Route Scout is one of two reasons I'm getting a new phone.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.

I'm a bit disappointed/frustrated/angry to report that Route Scout does not work under water. :tt:
*This is the result of user mismanagement and uncontrollable environmental conditions. The app software works great.

@chumley
I will answer that one for Joe. An underwater version is currently in development the dev team says it should be up and running by Christmas, if anyone has an IPhone six or Android that they would not mind using in the testing phase please send me a P.M.

@chumley
doh, sorry to hear!

@all iOS users
hiking with an iOS user it came to my attention HAZ Tracks ( Route Scout is the same in this aspect ) loses satellite reception when you take a break. This was probably mentioned, however I didn't fully grasp it as I do not use iOS in the field.

It is fixed in 2.0.22 that will be out in about 2 weeks. In the mean time pause and unpause for breaks or restart the app after your break.

Not sure if this is something other iPhone users have noticed, but in the two uses of RS so far, the audio nature calls do not play. The splits begin with audio announcing what the unplayed nature call was, but at no time has the nature call itself ever played.

This is obviously a feature that is not integral to the operation of RS, which otherwise seems to be working well. But I'd be curious if anybody on iPhone with Route Scout has heard the crow squawk or a coyote howl, etc.

First, I applaud Joe, the HAZ Dev team, and whoever else had a part in creating/programming Route Scout. Especially for being a free program. Overall it is a great program with plenty of features many others do not have.

That said... as a former software test engineer, particularly one who was charged with finding the most intuitive solutions for software programs, I'm always seeking a better way. So here and now, I still only seek to help make Route Scout a better program, not just for me, but for all users.

(Galaxy S5, Android 5.0, Kernel 3.4.0)
Today was only my second time using Route Scout. The first time out (last week) I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong or if I was just used to HazTracks. But today I paid more attention to what was happening and it got to be VERY frustrating.

Issue #1
Ok, so I tap the Center icon so that RS will keep me centered on the screen while tracking. Great, that works... but only UNTIL I do one of the following:
- Touch the screen to move the map
- Tap the zoom out icon
- I zoom in or out with a swipe of the fingers
(and possibly any time any other icon is touched?)

After any of the above, the Center icon is now darkened and (which I think means it has cross-hairs in the map center?) the cross-hairs no longer follow along the track where I am. Ok, fine... I'll just tap the Center icon again, only to have it zoom back in to the default zoom. While that may be fine much of the time, but when I WANT it be zoomed out slightly, the cross-hairs it will no longer keep tracking me.

For my use, I'd rather have the default to center on me as it tracks me, with "Center Map" to be enabled only when I wish it to be.

Issue #2
While RS is recording and I'm viewing the screen, when I zoom by spreading (or closing) my fingers on the screen and let go, it appears to zoom back one notch. I seem to recall it zooming farther back, when I'm zooming in than zooming out. Ok, so zoom it again... fine, but it should do that.
[NOTE: It does not appear to do it when I'm just Viewing a track, not actually tracking}

Issue #3
While hiking to a point on the map was labeled 7367 feet in elevation, Route Scout displayed 7267, exactly 100 feet less. I consulted my GPS and it had it pegged as the map stated, 7367. Ok, no big deal, I'll check the track elevation it when I get home,thinking who knows if the AEG will be correct.

I uploaded the track and found the track to be accurate, 7367. Now I don't know how it all works, whether its the mapping, the phone, or something in the programming?? All I know is that it was off 100 feet.

Issue #4
Ok, maybe not a 'bug', but usability could be improved.
While tracking is in progress and I select the square on the top left, the only choices are Save and Cancel. Why isn't there a Delete? As in, I want to stop tracking but I do NOT want to save the track.
Sure, I can save it, select it, select delete, and confirm the deletion. But that's too many steps when it could be just delete and confirm.

Issue #5
Now I'll admit this one is a pure wish...
It would be nice to have FS Topo loaded as the default map whenever a complete track is in a National Forest. (Or the option to choose which map when loading the map while online)
The map I was dealing with today (CalTopo or MyTopo?) was of no help when I came to a road and wondered if in fact it WAS a designated forest road or not.

thx Mark

1) can be fixed, thx for the heads up
2) tried it while recording, only see that going past min/max which it should
3) smartphones are NOT great at elevation
4) same as HAZ Tracks except in RS labels were added above buttons. upper left "finish", upper right "menu"
5) there is a chance your wish may surface before Christmas

I don't doubt that at all. However, in this instance, if that was the case, why did the saved track have the correct elevation?

If the phone was in fact, incorrect at that time, could it be once the track is imported to Route Cloud that it is somehow 'corrected' against the map overlay?

As with HAZ tracks before it, route scout automatically syncs the track elevation when saved to route cloud.

After I download a route and select "follow / load off-line maps," the following dialog appears:
route scout.PNG
what's the difference between selecting "yes" or "no."

Maybe I need to reword it differently. Offline maps can only be added for 1 route. When setting for a new route it deletes any (if any) maps loaded for previous routes. It's just asking to be sure that you want to replace the maps.
