San Francisco Peaks maps and name errors

There are a few inconsistencies in the topo maps that cover the SF Peaks area north of Flagstaff. Does anybody have information about how these errors occurred and/or if there are good sources for the correct names of things?

A couple of notables:
Fremont Saddle and Doyle Saddle are switched. (See CalTopo layer vs MyTopo layer)
Rees Peak is sometimes spelled Reese. Same with Reese Tanks and Reese Canyon.
Abineau Canyon runs between Humphreys and unnamed peak 11783.
Rees (Reese?) Canyon runs between 11783 and Abineau Peak.
The canyon between Rees and Abineau is named Bear Jaw Canyon.
None of that makes any sense at all!
(quick reference photo here: http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=507844)
As noted in the photo caption, the forest service has installed a sign along the road identifying the photo location as Abineau Canyon when it is marked as Reese Canyon on the maps (topo maps AND the official Coconino NF map). It would actually make sense if it actually is Abineau Canyon. But if that's Abineau Canyon, then what is the major canyon that runs between Humphreys and 11783 called!

There's also an annoying one on the Humphreys summit route where you pass the topo contour marked 11,800 -- sweet! Less than 1000 feet to go! Except it's really only 10,800. ](*,)

These are switched in a lot of references. I'm tempted to guess that they are (or were previously) wrong on a USGS Quad.

Abineau is named after Julius Aubineau

Oooh! I found a treasure-trove of answers on one single web page. Check it out here:

In a nutshell:
Major General Andrew Atkinson Humphreys (1810-1883)
Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz (1807-1873) - a very racist guy. Some have removed his name due to his unpopular views.
John Charles Frémont (1813-1890) - chums child insisted on the accent to give the appearance of class
Allen Doyle (1849-1921)
Julius Aubineau (1852-1903) - Flagstaff mayor and strip club owner :)
Tom Rees (1866-1936)
Charles Hugo Schulz (1854-1934)

Details on each of the above can be found in the Daily Sun article linked above. Heritage, political views, and how to pronounce their names.

What goes unexplained is why the maps are wrong or the canyons don't geographically align to the peaks they drain.
