After a lot of time and effort HikeArizona.com now hosts the most comprehensive, detailed, and easy to use interactive map of Grand Canyon backcountry use areas. The NPS doesn't have an online map available -- they tell you to buy a paper map! Some other sources have rudimentary drawings. Nothing compares to this though! You can find a link to it at the bottom of all description pages for Grand Canyon hikes here on HAZ.

What is the significance of the Red, Blue, Grey and Purple shading?

It's all explained in the sidebar on the left.

The legend is available in the upper right on page load. When you click around the map other stuff loads into that area. As of a few minutes ago it is now permanently available below the "tracks and waypoints" dialog. Other layout ideas with the existing map interface are welcome, just enter into the feedback console at the bottom of the map.

I believe they are navigational buoy markers or something maritime related. But they were the only options that had enough colors to signify day use, corridor, threshold, primitive, and wild areas. So mine sweep all you want!

Great map. The only thing missing now is an online permit reservations system to go with it so I don't have to fax in my stupid permit requests anymore. @chumley are you working on that?
