Shorts or pants on the nobo spring thru hike?

I was hoping to bring 2 pr. ultra light shorts ,1 long john and 1 pr.combo rain/hiking pants.
I have heard stories of people using pants for the majority of the spring thru hike.
What would be the safest strategy for weight and comfort. Any input would be much appreciated.
Thanks Dave

I used one set of long pants w zip off legs which I didn't take off, and one set of long johns. Also had some rain pants but don't think I ever put them on.

Let me introduce you to one more of the many awesome features of HAZ.
In the search box at the top of the page, (ARIZONA A - Z SEARCH) type "AZT."
All AZT passages, and a few other hikes like Aztec, will appear.
Click on the one you are concerned about.
In the resulting window, upper right, is a "Historical Weather" link.
Click on that for average temps along that passage. (Same for any HAZ hike.)
Send Joe a check. ;)
