Lake Tahoe Hiking

Having a family reunion near Lake Tahoe in July. Never been before. I know there are tons of hiking options in the area. Looking to winnow the list down by soliciting the recommendations of HAZ-ers. No special parameters on length or difficulty, though I'm looking for day hikes, not backpacking. We will be staying near Truckee, but can travel around as needed to a TH.

I've never hiked it myself, but I've been told the
Tahoe Rim Trail is pretty nice.

The Desolation Wilderness is definitely worth checking out. I don't know if day hikes require a permit or not- but overnight trips do. Lake Aloha from Echo Lake TH is a nice hike, despite being a bit crowded. You could also try entering the wilderness the back way from Emerald Bay to visit Fontanillis, Dick, and Velma Lakes and avoid some of the tourists.

The Sierra Buttes are about an hour away from Truckee, and are worth visiting. I've heard the hike to Mount Rose's summit from the Mount Rose ski area is pretty cool, and a lot more pleasant than its twin hike from the east side (i.e. Reno).
I have some familiarity with the area so let me know what type of hike you're looking for, and I'd be happy to help.
