Rim to Rim to Rim?

Since I consider myself full of machismo hiking idiocy, the call of the Canyon is luring me to attempt a one day Rim to Rim to Rim. Has anyone done this? If so, what trails did you use, what time of year is ideal, what time of day should I start, how much water did you carry and where did you refill? Pretty much the general questions. Some advice (including perhaps why I shouldn't even attempt this) would be greatly appreciated. :)

Every Spring and Fall the past few years my husband has been doing Rim to Rim. And then we stay one day on the north rim and then he hikes back the next. We have found by going on the closest weekend to the close or the opening of the North rim is the best. It isn't quite as hot in the bottom of the canyon then. He normally starts some where around 4 to 5 am and ends up at the top about 1 to 2 PM. That really makes a difference to get out of the bottom during the morning hours. The fall time also has the Aspens all in the fall colors and it is pretty too...
