Why hike the designated trail, there are plenty of place to hike across Arizona.

* First, so I understand the question, this is in regards to the trail summaries, logged, comments and ect.? If so I love it! Excellent reference sourses when considering hikes in the future. Tell all my friends about this site if they express an interest in hiking. :

* Yes. Mostily in and around the Prescott area.

* My goal this year is to write as many summaries about the trails in the Prescott area. In short represent the Prescott area for those who may come up this way for a visit. In addition, I tell folks my main goal is to hike every trail in Arizona. I need a place to visit to aquire as much info as I can.

* I am quite happy with the layout. User friendly and I am dangerous with a computer.

In closing, I think this site is awesome, I enjoy reading folks comments, and I enjoy the cyber company.

Would it be possible to have a link to a compilation of Arizona Trail information. Like a compilation of trail reviews and related articles? Maybe something like one of the index section? I know there are other sites out there with this information but for some reason i would just rather get it from HAZ.

There's been an increasing amount of request for an AZT specific forum. So here it is!

Maybe I oughta answer the q's myself!

I'm glad the effort was and still is being put forth to make it happen.

Very little

want to... yes, but the ol' job would never permit
guess I'll have settle for day hike sections like most

Do you like the layout?
that's a big fat NO from the Four Peaks north
I think it's pretty well laid out from the Four Peaks south
with the exception of the border
It doesn't really promote further travel in&out in of the state in my mind. I don't think many will be extending further south then the border. If it would have veered to the SE corner it would be a good connector with the CDT and then zig zagged up to the PCT... yeah I know that's not really possible but something just doesn't seem right about the layout to me

There's an AZT link at the bottom of every page and in the "Select an Index" drop down menu at the top of every page. I know it's not complete but it's a start. I'm thinking maybe to put the AZT Forums in there and a run down of the AZT in general. Probably condense the section layout a bit. Ideas always welcome!

I think an AZT section on HAZ is a natural, and I'm glad to see this here. Let's keep thinking about how to make this a way to advance enjoyment of the trail, expand this community to include AZT hikers and enthusiasts, and promote the kind of outdoor activity we all enjoy.

There might be a place for links to other trail sites, such as the AZT Association, and web sites with more information. I wonder if there is commercial interest in providing support-shuttles, resupply, and trail side services like showers, lodging, supplies, etc. I'll be watching and spreading the word where and when I can.

Dah! Thanks Joe, I should have made the connection. Been awhile since giving this trail a thought or reviewing it via the internet.
*From my reviewing the info I think the idea of a trail From Mexico to Utah is awesome.
*No, not yet. Not in the plans for the moment.
*Yes, time permitted. Could be a great goal to hike it all.
*Have not studied the layout in great detail yet.

1. I am excited about the AZT, I have always wanted to hike across the state. Now with a complete (well almost) trail system that goal will require a little less planning.

2. I have hiked very few of the trails included in the plan, the ones I have hiked are in the superior area.

3. I want to through-hike the entire trail.

4. The layout is alright, yhe first part of the trail (southern part) takes you past quite a few interesting points, and through the best parts of the transition zone, right by the superstitions. After you go up past the rim I don't have much experience with the trails or the terrain, but at least it goes through the GC. I think it would have been better if, like Joe said, the trail had the opportunity to connect with other national trial systems. Of course a dedicated backpacker could probably find a way....

I think it is a great concept and hope it gets completed.

Have done 2 sections backpacking with my son, Hwy 87 down to Rock Crossing Campground in 7-2001 and just got back from doing the Marshall Lake (or should I say Field) to Sandy Canyon/Canyon Vista Campground.

I would like to do as many sections as possible, or all of it at once after I win the Powerball.

The layout, I suppose is the best that can be done via private and public lands.

I am glad to see a post here, looked like this subject was being ignored. Perhaps that is because of the season, too hot for most of the trail right now.

I'd like to get at it in the fall. Wonder how much of it burned in the Aspen fire.

This post should probably be in the book section: there is a spectacular photo book out "Along the Arizona Trail" by M John Fayhee- he hiked about 650 miles of it before the complete trail was open. He writes a nice continuum complete with wonderful photo's. Of course parts of the trail are different now but gives a nice overview.

I have dreamed of hiking the AZT for as long as it has been a concept. This year I attempted it, first as a thru hike, but it let me know that was beyond my ability.

I am now doing it in segments, with the next one in Sept. North Rim of GC to Utah. So far I've done about 200 miles this year.

The layout is fair, because they're just trying to get a contiguous line from Mexico to Utah. A lot of it is on roads and anywhere they can get legal access. They may be able to tweak it later, but the really big access battles are still being fought. If you can lend your voice to the good fight for the trail, find your local trails advocacy group and contact them. They can best tell you how to help!

I hiked from Mexico to Miller Canyon in March 2003, and saw lots of evidence of illegals. Skipped up to Parker Canyon Lake to Patagonia, then Patagonia to hwy 83, I think. From there I went north of Oracle to Freeman Rd, then Pine to Flagstaff. Hopscotching because my body's aches and my life's demands require it.

If you're interested in really good info, do a search for Dave Hick's AZT site.

I live in Tucson, so I watched the Aspen Fire lay waste to our green escape. And the Aspen fire did destroy or at least limit access for now to the majority of the Santa Catalina portion of the trail. It will be a long time before we can get back up there, I'm afraid. Forget about anything above 6600 feet for sure, and maybe some other parts of the trail below that.

If you want to do a really great portion of the AZT, do the canyon just north of the General Springs Cabin on the Mogollon Rim...very pretty, with some water and waterfalls. Not too hard to get too, but not overrun! Five stars from most everyone I've heard talk about it. Five stars was my own experience, as well.

The Public Lands Information Center is now selling 7.5 min topo maps with the AZTrail route delineated. The trail stewards and others have carried GPS units over it, and downloaded the route to the maps. Very Cool!
