Peaks Fire Update
June 21, 2016
PHOENIX, June 21, 2016—For Immediate Release. The Peaks Fire, discovered on Monday night, is burning approximately 50 miles northeast of Apache Junction in a rugged, remote portion of the Four Peak Wilderness. This fire is burning near the Brown Fire which burned approximately 900 acres over several weeks during the summer of 2014. This fire is currently smoldering and creeping along the ground, however, afternoon thunderstorms with gutsy, erratic winds could cause the Peaks Fire to put up a smoke column in the afternoon. High temperatures and afternoon thunderstorms are a safety concern for fire managers. After an overflight this morning, fire managers are carefully considering how to safely contain this fire under these extreme conditions.
There are no immdiate threats to any property, however as a safety precaution , the Tonto National Forest is closing trails and a short section of road in the Four Peaks area. These include: Forest Road 648 at the junction with Forest Road 143; Lone Pine (trails 134 and 123) and Pigeon Springs trailheads (trail 134); and Rock Creek (trail 123); Mill Ridge (trail 130); Mud Springs (trail 83); and Cane Springs (trail 83) trails. The Lone Pine, Pigeon Springs, Rock Creek and Mill Ridge trailheads are accessed from the Roosevelt Lake Side of Four Peaks. The Mud Springs and Cane Springs trailheads are accessed from State Highway 87.
