This Saturday (7/16) at the Bluff Community Center at 11am, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will be attending a public hearing on the proposed Bears Ears National Monument, covering Cedar Mesa, Comb Ridge, Red Canyon, Elk Ridge, Dark Canyon, and Indian Creek. There will be tribal representatives, local conservation groups, and of course opponents. I will be there (along with others) hopefully speaking on behalf of the fossil resources of the area. If you like hiking, backpacking, camping, or otherwise enjoying this area and/or support preservation, conservation, and research on scientific and cultural resources in the area please please please consider coming by and lending your support! Contact me if you have any questions on the meeting.

I wish I could have attended. What was the meeting like?

Packed! The community center was full, the shade tent outside was full, and people were standing outside in the sun. The Secretary extended the meeting for a half hour, until 4:30, because there were so many people who had entered the lottery to speak. I'm glad she did, since I ended up being the second-to-last one to go up to the mic!
