One Week On The AZ Trail Help

Hi Everyone,

I am planning on taking 6 days and spending it on the AZ Trail around the third week of October. I have been backpacking for pretty much my entire life, but the only AZT experience is the Southern portions around Tucson.

Being a S. Arizonan I would prefer to spend most of the week above the tree line. I don't mind a day of hiking from the desert to the pines though. I was hoping I could get people's suggestions on which portion I should focus on for my 6 day trip. I am planning on averaging around 15-20 miles a day and heading South to North.

Thanks for you help!

If you're looking to stay in the trees most of the time you're most likely going to want to stay above the Mogollon Rim.

But, I'd give serious consideration for Roosevelt to Pine. You'll do cactus to pines multiple times and the fall colors in the Mazzies are awesome.

I agree with DallinW. A must go and do + offers a variety of views and memories to have.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it! I will look into starting at passage 22.

Weather related question: I am currently looking at October 15th-23rd. I see the historical weather in Flagstaff is in the 60's. Does anyone have any experience with passages 27-31 during that time of year? Mostly wondering what I can expect for lows throughout the trip.

Thanks!

Click on the appropriate passage on the AZT page. In the top right, click on Historical Weather.

I think historical weather is only available on desktop. Mobile only shows the current forecast.
