Hey all, I just got back from a hike from pine trail head to dude creek and back, my intentions where to make it all the way to horton Springs and back but my food supply fell short , I did manage to pass dude creek maybe a 1 1/2 miles but the vegetation was real high and long to the point where you couldn't tell the trail from an animal trail, I use urux and OsmAnd for gps for navigation but I wasn't trustING it plus it was getting dark on me so I decided to call it a night at dude creek.

This will be my 3rd time doing a section of the highline and I will complete it, what is the best way to navigate thru that section with heavy vegetation.

Re: hiking through heavy brush -- aside from the pants Joe Bartel mentioned, I also take a pair of leather gloves. I hate using my bare hands to move catclaw out of the way, so it helps maintain that all-important good attitude ... LOL.

Watch out for snakes and javelina in that thick stuff.

That part of the trail is the worst of the whole thing. I turned around at about the same place it sounds like you did a few years ago. A GPS and hiking pole will help, I don't know if anyone got out there and has maintained it since the fire. In nicer weather I would have looked around more.

Yea, the reason I turned back was the weeds were literally 4" tall and the trail was not even visible anymore plus it was starting to get dark so I called it a night and camped near dude creek.

I carry a small hand-held clipper in a holster for my encounters with pesky vegetation.
