Indian Spring Peak 4900 - Tonto NF, AZ :: Question by kpomm

Cannondale Kid and Joe Bartels - Is it possible to hike FR1333 to area above Indian Springs Wash, then descend into the wash from that area? I hiked the wash from the bottom about 2/3 of the way in and would like to make a loop from FR1333 down. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello, I'm guessing you mean Indian Spring Canyon

If you hiked up from FR3456 you must have turned around just shy. FR1333 "looks" 1/2 way up the canyon.

Albeit likely slow it looks doable, I haven't hiked it personally.

EDIT: I misread part of the question. I'm not sure what part you mean above the wash then drop into the wash part. Sounds like CannondaleKid has a grip on it. Here is his file overlaid onto the area to visualize.

From the southern end of FR 1333 I've driven in the wash up Indian Spring Canyon only as far as here:
33.81161 -111.50138
However, I have driven the full distance of FR 1333 to the northern end, about a mile after it reconnects to the Indian Spring Canyon wash.

Back in early 2013 I had bagged Maverick Mountain & Peak 4403 and on the return leg I followed the last 3/4-mile in the Indian Spring Canyon wash back to where I parked. It was NOT easy, taking 40 minutes to travel that last 3/4 mile, and that was going DOWN the wash... I dropped down some spots it would have been tough to go the other direction.

So... based on my experience on that short distance, it may be possible to follow the wash up to Indian Spring Peak, but it would be a tough haul. Going down the wash should be easier physically, but likely harder route-finding. When I was headed down-stream it wasn't always easy to find the shortest drop.

Below is my route from Peak 4403 with a possible route upstream to ISP heading NE for the last ascent. (I did not create a route directly north (west side of ISP) because by satellite it looks nasty and more winding.

@joebartels / @CannondaleKid... Looks like @kpomm posted this question in more than one location. Of course I saw this one second. hopefully one of us gave him the answer he was looking for :)

Thanks, Joe, Cannondale and Eagle. If we aren't rained out, we intend to try the hike tomorrow. Since Caryl is 5'1' and I'm only 5'6", we'll have to use a bit of discretion. Scrambling in the canyon's wash last week was a challenge in some areas and I don't want to be a poster child for S & R. Will see what happens.

@The_Eagle Latest attempt on FR1333 was 12/16, and where TRAL sign is near Quartz Tank, ran into rain. Hiked in it for a bit but realized temp was dropping and mud had already been a problem. So no luck that Friday but we'll try again. Thanks for your help
