Wondering if anyone can vouch for the current condition (since the rains of Jan. '17) of the SOUTH access road (coming up from Maricopa) to Quartz Peak.
Thanks!

Not sure, but I think JJiii observed a small compact Chevy out there a day or two ago.

@hikeaz
Can't tell you about current conditions, but in case you haven't seen this, it is a way in from the south avoiding the gnarly spots.

Thank you.
I read apropos trip reports but they do not seem to mention the south entry road - the standard access route is from the NNW of Q.P. (Estrella Parkway, etc)

You'll need high clearance from the south.

JJ says it's no worse than last time he went through there.

Yes that is correct. Road from south is about the same as always. High clearance should be okay with 4x4 preferred for a couple spots. Chevy compact came in from the north. If you get out there and get in trouble feel free to call me for help. 602-478-5646.

Thanks for the beta, all.

The workaround route: to the landfill and then around the airport to the power lines is without issue. Clearance may be necessary (no prius') but easy going.

The road that follows the powerlines from the highway to the Q.P. turnoff is rutted in the various washes in the southern portion - more serious clearance necessary (likely 7"+) but is 2WD'able.

Did read in the log on Q.P. " After going off-roading in our rental Nissan compact, tearing off the front bumper... the hike went well..." Presumably they came in from the north, but speed can do some damage if you come across a wash that you have misjudged. (Ask Joe Image)
