Pelecanus occidentalis

Habitat:Sandy, coastal beaches and lagoons. Rocky cliffs and pilings around waterfronts. Resident of the Pacific Coast from Southern California to Chile. After nesting season, will travel as far as Southern British Columbia. Also found on the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to Venezuela, including all of the States in the Gulf Coast. Juveniles have been known to stray into inland Waters and States.

Description:Large, Brown, robust Bird with a long, flat Bill. Head is Whitish in adults with a dark Brown on back of Neck during Breeding Season. Juveniles are Brown above and White below. The only non-White Pelican in the World.

Comments: The State Bird of Louisiana, the Brown Pelican was devasted in numbers by the pesticide DDT. Through Conservation efforts, it has returned and has been removed from the Endangered Species list.

It is a diving Bird, plunging down from over 50 feet to dive for Fish. Unlike it's larger White relative, it hardly ever soars. Notably non-vocal except when nesting, the Brown Pelican is also relatively tame and will take food from human hands when offered.
