Comets are celestial objects that orbit the sun in an elliptical path. Comets consist of a solid core made up of frozen water, gases, and dust.

When comets approach the sun, the icy core partially melts, releasing a visible gaseous coma that surrounds it's center. Frequently, the gaseous coma extends and includes a tail, but not always. Light from the sun reflects off the comet and its tail, making it visible in the night sky.

Comet orbits range from just a few years to several hundred years. Comets visible to the naked eye average only about one per year, though very bright or notable comets may be referred to as great comets, though there is no official, scientific definition of what is required to make a comet a great comet.
