Corvus monedula

A member of the crow family. Northern and eastern populations are migratory; other populations are resident. 13-15" in length with mostly black feathers. (See sub-specie color variations below.) Generally found in open areas, such as fields and pastures, scattered woods, in cities, or coastal cliffs. Will eat pretty much anything. Very vocal.

Also includes the four sub-species:

  1. C. m. monedula: Found from Denmark and Germany into Eastern Europe. It has a pale nape and sides of the neck, a dark throat, and a light grey partial collar of variable extent.

  2. C. m. spermologus: Found in Western Europe from the British Isles south to Morocco. It is darker in colour than the other subspecies and lacks the whitish border at the base of the grey nape. The label detail photo shows a C. m. spermologus.

  3. C. m. soemmerringii: Found in northeastern Europe and Central Asia, down to Iran and Kashmir. It is distinguished by the nape and the sides of the neck being paler, creating a contrasting black crown and lighter grey part collar.

  4. C. m. cirtensis: Found in northwest Africa. The plumage is duller and more uniformly dark grey than the other subspecies, with the paler nape less distinct.
