Apalone spinifera

Habitat:Native to the Eastern U.S., but introduced throughout the Southern and Western States. Canals, Ponds, Irrigation Ditches, Urban Lakes, and Rivers. Prefers slow moving Water with soft bottoms and gradual banks.

Description:Flat, circular, soft shell. Pointed beak type Snout. Leathery shell, light on underside. Light Markings on Shell, more pronounced in Juveniles and Males. Females grow much larger than Males. Usually Tan, Gray or Greenish Gray. Flat, Webbed Feet. Long extendable Neck.

Comments:Highly Aguatic and mainly Carnivorous. It can move extremely fast for it's size and can deliver a painful Bite. Often mistaken for a Snapping Turtle, but belongs to an entire Family of it's own.
