Aythya affinis

Habitat:Winters in the Southern half of the Lower 48 States and on both Coasts...Summers in Northern Colorado, Utah and the Northern Great Plains up into Canada and Alaska. Inland, it prefers Freshwater Ponds and Marshes, but resides in Salt and Fresh Water in the Southern States.

Description:Male has light Gray Body, Black Chest and Black appearing Head that is glossed with Purple. Female is dark Brown with light Face Patch. Blue Bill on Male in Breeding Plumage, Females Bill is more Gray, both have dark Spot on end of Bill.

Comments:Greater Scaup is similar but Male has Green Sheen to head instead of Purple, Head Crown is shorter and Forehead is more sloped.
