Trichechus manatus

The West Indian Manatee or Sea Cow resides in the Atlantic Ocean along the coasts of the West Indies, Florida and to South American (Brazil), occasionally going north to South Carolina. One was recording going as far as Massachusetts. They are large marine mammals that eat aquatic plants and need to be along the coast to drink freshwater. They need warm water to survive and can die if the water is under 68 degrees F. They are found in canals and rivers near the coast and along the coast. Females are larger than the males. Males weigh over a ton and Females can weigh over 3 tons. Manatees are threatened. They are frequently killed by motorboats. It is illegal to feed manatees, and apparently, love to eat lettuce.
