Crocodylus acutus

American crocodiles live in brackish or near brackish water. They are similar to alligators but have a narrower snout, are brown and not black, and prefer some salinity in the waters they inhabit. They are neotropic and they range extends to South America to the Everglades and inhabit the some the Carribean Islands. Unlike the crocodiles in Africa and Australia, the American crocodile is not aggressive and generally eat prey as big or smaller than their heads.

American crocodiles in Florida on endangered species list. They are found along the coast of the southern part of the everglades and in and around Crocodile Lake in Florida. They do not tolerate the cold as well as alligator and many die during cold winter days. They also do not hibernate. Florida is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles co-exist.
